Invited Open Competition Jing`An District Central Shanghai in Association Tengbom Stockholm
Design scope includes over 14 Hectares of Urban Master Planning. The site fronts the famous Suzhou Creek in the Northeast corner of Jingàn District, in the heart of downtown Shanghai. Importantly the site will link busy Nanjing Road to the South extending new inner city development North.
The client is the Shanghai Jing`An Urban Planning Authority and the area will become a modern service industry hub for the City. The site includes many of the traditional and historically significant Li-Long type terraced houses dating from circa 1910. 4 other historic buildings and sites are to be preserved including a Roman Catholic Church from 1915.
The scheme follows 3 main themes embracing a strong Ecological/sustainable approach, Historic preservation, and appropriate Human scale. The “Green Valley” concept also connects well with the current Suzhou Creek Masterplan creating a green corridor down to the CBD and the Huangpu river.
Over 500,000 square metres of new building space will be created with 2 landmark buildings, highest of which is just over 150 metres. Uses include retail, office, SOHO, serviced apartments and 2 major shopping malls linking to a new subway station adjacent to the new Science and Technology Museum.
